Legal relief for undocumented comes with drivers licenses in 2015

More than a million undocumented immigrants drive in California without a state driver’s license. But their fears of being stopped at checkpoints and having their vehicles impounded will soon be relieved. Governor Jerry Brown signed AB60 into law in October, permitting undocumented drivers to apply for a licenses starting in 2015.   The licenses will not be federally recognized, though, meaning undocumented residents still can't board planes or drive over state lines.  “It’s progress being able to drive without fear (and) having the confidence to drive legally.”  Read more coverage of the bill and the problems it was designed to solve on Boyle Heights Beat.
