Youth share ideas about getting parents engaged in schools

The Local Control Funding Formula, enacted this year by the state legislature, will boost underfunded school districts and give parents more say over how school money is spent.Voicewaves asked Long Beach students what schools should do to get more parents involved in schools.  Responses vary, but all include an increase in communication between teachers and parents -- kids say parents need to be convinced that they play an essential role in their child's education.  Acknowledging that some parents may lack time or motivation to come, one responder says participation begins with an incentive to attend parent-teacher meetings.  "Children can be sent home with flyers that offer information about the meeting and making sure it is known that there will be free food. After the food brings parents, educators can engage them about educational issues."  Read the responses on Voicewaves.parentinvolve
