The high price of work: teens pitch in to boost family in hard times

The U.S. unemployment rate for 16-to-19-year-olds is nearly twice as high as it was in 2000.  This labor market has forced teens from lower income families to work in low-skill areas where experience isn't prized as much as a willingness to work hard for low wages.  High school student Guadalupe Castro has worked since he was ten years old, helping his family cleaning floors in the evenings after school.  Young people who work and go to school say their education suffers, a fact they'd like to avoid but feel compelled to help their families out.  The story is on Boyle Heights Beat.
