How to win a hackathon

At February's "Hackathon" in Oakland, CA, a team that included Youth Radio's Storm White won first place with their app, MyStudyBuddy, an app for busy community college students to organize study sessions with each other. Going into this competition, Storm White held an image of tech-savvy youth, one that did not reflect her at all. "I had never attended a hackathon before. I had imagined a bunch of experienced, and mostly white, programmers and designers building Instagram over a weekend. To my surprise, the attendees were people like me: young people with not too much tech experience and who too often aren’t expected to shine." Now she's imparting the guidance she wishes she'd been given before her first hackathon, so other youth of color can be confident with what they're bringing in. Get more on Youth Radio.
