Black families on front lines of displacement

Richmond is changing. The south side, traditionally a predominantly black neighborhood, is changing as more Latino, Asian and white families move in. Diversity can be good, but some older residents worry that soon, South Richmond will no longer be familiar to them. The city's black population has dropped by 35 percent since 2000, and advocates hypothesize that rent and housing prices are chief factors. “With things changing in Richmond, crime going down, new business in the market, it makes it seem that Richmond is thriving. Yet as rent goes up significantly, we have not seen an increase in living wages, which unintentionally forces people out.”  The report is on Richmond Pulse.
