Bullet in the bedroom

Maya Escobar was just a kid when a gunshot fired on the street outside of her house came through her bedroom window. She tried to prepare her siblings for the possibility of violence entering their home again, but now she fears her little sister is traumatized by the specter of another shooting. Maya remembers the sights, sounds, and feelings of that moment so well.  “POP-POP-POP! And a bullet came smashing through my window, landing in the wall just inches above my head. I stopped playing outside like i used to, because I carried fear of getting hurt. I started paying attention to the noises outside my house, and wherever I went, I listened for any angry voices or people yelling at each other.” To tell the story more vividly — more like the way she remembers it — she narrated it for an animated video on Youth Radio.
