Initiative would have changed Merced's voting system

Measure T, a proposition that would have changed the way Merced city council members are elected, was defeated in November.  Proponents argued that a single-member district system would have increased diversity and fair representation in areas with a constituency made up largely of racial minorities. The at-large system, they argue, dilutes minority votes and hampers the political agendas of Latino-dominated districts. Measure T was debated heavily in Merced, as reported by We'Ced.map
