A memorable World Cup lingers - for all the wrong reasons

Benny Escobedo is still thinking about the World Cup – for unexpected reasons.Non-soccer related problems can sometimes overshadow this majestic tournament. Brazilians felt spurned when the country spent $11 billion to build the stadium, saying the money should have gone to citizens struggling to find jobs and basic resources. Several workers died while constructing the stadium, under pressure to finish the job fast. Is the joy the game brings to fans worth the suffering it brings? "What I didn’t anticipate was that this World Cup would wake me up to a side of the game I’d never thought about: the cost of the tournament on ordinary people living in the host country."  His reflections on sports and society are on We'Ced.cup
