What's behind the image-consciousness of teens?

No one likes being cited by the fashion police, whether you’re a teenager or an adult. About a quarter of adults who reported high stress in a nationwide survey said appearance was a factor. How do teens gauge the importance of looks and clothing in their daily lives?  "In the chaotic life of teenagers, we have very little control over the other things that stress us out– the curfew our parents set, the pop quizzes our teachers give, and the shade our peers throw at us.
