Why aren't Cambodians engaged beyond Khmer New Year?

Long Beach is home to the largest Cambodian community outside of Cambodia.  Every year droves of Cambodian Americans celebrate the Khmer New Year and reflect on challenges facing the community. But local leaders say there's a resistance to political engagement -- registering to vote and participating in civic matters -- that could have deep-rooted causes. “A lot of the turmoil and so forth exists back at home.
