This isn't just teen angst. It's depression

Many strategies have been proposed to spot or prevent mental health problems in youth, from school staff identifying students with anxiety or depression, to making counseling accessible for teens, who are ill-equipped to improve their moods alone.  But mental illness has no one-size-fits-all model.  Experts note that in privileged communities, the cause of violence and abuse is frequently attributed to mental illness, whereas in poorer settings violence is viewed as a cultural norm.  We also hear from former Youth Radio reporter about her experience with bipolar disorder.  "The war inside my brain began during my freshman year of high school, I remember the first time I really started to feel out of control..."   A discussion of teen mental health in different contexts is on the Youth Radio Podcast.depression-e463a655307ccad3f1e741b74f3193f81620b2c1-s6-c10
