Sex does not define gender

Deven Patton has some things to say about how young people are increasingly accepting gender as a social construct; she speaks of social and historical forces which pressure males and females to adopt gendered personalities.  "When I was in the third grade, my favorite color was blue. One day in class, a boy told me that my favorite color should be pink because pink is a girl color and blue is a boy color...Many people don’t know that gender is a social concept unlike sex, which is biological." A youth perspective on  how sex is different from gender aired on  Youth Radio's Core Show.
