Coachella High students open to dialogue on Arab mascot

Coachella Valley High School students had an open conversation a group that says the school's mascot, the Arab, perpetuates negative stereotypes.  A representative from the Arab American Anti Discrimination Committee (ADC) pointed to the mascot’s large nose, heavy beard and its overall cartoonish, caricatured depiction of an Arab man.  The school's logo, which is prominently displayed during sports events, was a top concern.  The Committee and the high school reached a compromise that satisfied both sides.  “In meeting with the students, what we’ve seen is a developing understanding of our stance and our point of view, why this is offensive and needs to be changed.  The students are starting to understand the position.”  Read the full story on Coachella Unincorporated.Arabs-Mascot-Coachella-Valley-High-School_1383850616292_1225547_ver1.0_320_240
