Women stage sit-in, call for movement on immigration reform

A coalition of women activists gathered outside of Congressman and House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy’s office in downtown Bakersfield in a demonstration and act of civil disobedience, demanding action on federal immigration reform and an end to deportations. Demonstrators emphasized the ways in which the absence of good immigration policies results in the special mistreatment of women -- no protections against skewed wages and sexual harassment in the work place -- as well deportations that create broken families and leave single mothers as sole breadwinners.  “Because we’re women we are overlooked and brushed aside, yet we are the ones who bear the brunt of these policies.”  Read coverage of the demonstration and its context in immigration reform is on South Kern Sol.sit in
