Advice to parents: communication and food are keys to school success

For recent high school grads Stephen Fong and Yuri Guan, the recipe for school success starts with some fairly basic ingredients.  When he was struggling at school, Fong's parents encouraged extracurricular activities like martial arts, to help him find something he was good at.  They supported him by keeping him well fed and maintaining a family routine.  Guan wishes her parents would have talked to her more about non-academic matters, to help her maintain a balanced life and a healthy relationship with them.  They share their versions of the parental-academic connection on New America Media.parents_500x279
