College Student Harvesting Education in Grape Fields

Mecca resident Enrique Lazcano wants to return to college at San Diego State this Fall, but he couldn't find a local job to bring in money for his family and new school fees.  So, he took a seasonal harvest job picking grapes in the Eastern Coachella Valley; but he didn't predict just how hard it would be.  “The hardest thing about working is being bent over and standing up for nine hours in the heat,” said Lazcano. “One humid day, I was ready to give up and go home because I still had five hours left for that day. I looked at an older worker and saw how hard he was working, then I realized that I needed to push through it.”  Read what he decided on Coachella Unincorporated.
