Organizations Call To Defund Police In Schools, Reallocate Funds To Provide More Mental Health Services

As the movement to defund the police gains traction, organizations in South Kern and surrounding communities are pushing to remove police from schools. “We know that the ratio of counselors and students [in Kern High School District] is a lot lower than the ratio of police on campus to students. There has always been an unbalanced ratio of any type of support services for students versus the police on campus.” said Cecilia Castro, Dolores Huerta Foundation’s education police director.
