Emancipation: one young man leaves foster care on his own terms

In his mind, Noel Anaya imagined the foster care system as a pair of gray hands: cold, institutional and unloving. Anaya entered the foster care system as a one year old child. When he became an emancipated adult at age 21, he told the judge “your gray hands just taught me how to survive in a world. We never learned how to love ourselves unconditionally."
