Youth leaders help bring millions to neglected Bakersfield district

One year after a Kern County high school student wrote about the unsafe walking conditions for residents of an unincorporated community outside Bakersfield, officials are launching a $6 million safety upgrade. Jocelyn Cuevas, now 17 and a senior at Golden Valley High, described the way the streets flooded with the rains, delaying simple services like mail delivery and forcing children to walk in the street."Even in good weather, the lack of sidewalks make it difficult for people in wheelchairs of pushing strollers to navigate the dirt shoulders and uneven ground."
