How peer counseling helped me feel safe at school

Finding an adult to help in a crisis isn’t always feasible for youth experiencing acute mental health issues. One ninth-grader in the middle of a break-down turned to an unusual outlet for help: her school’s peer counseling center. “Peer counselors aren’t trained professionals, but they are trained to handle what can be very emotional situations. They are fellow classmates or schoolmates who can empathize or relate.” Her story is on Voicewaves.
