Parents behind bars

As an adolescent, Gabriela Alvarez didn’t go home to her parents every day after school; she communicated with them through letters, phone calls, and occasional visits. “But the one emotion I never felt was shame. Nothing my parents do will ever make me turn my back on them. And in some ways they’ve helped me stay out of trouble.” Reflections on a childhood with incarcerated parents, from Project What and Youth Radio.
