High school students compete in Academic Decathlon

In past years, schools from the L.A. Unified School District haven’t ranked high in Academic Decathlons – a national series of scholastic competitions for high school academic teams. But this year, students from East L.A.’s Garfield High were singled out by the organization, in a first for the competition’s history. Garfield’s team finished seventh in the state competition, but for these four students the competition wasn’t over – the decathlon organization invited them to continue as individual contenders against students from other schools. The proud Garfield students, competing this week for a chance at the national title, spoke with Boyle Heights Beat.
