A lesson in civics, students pitch city improvements to Mayor

The idea of Civics Day in Oakland was to interest young people in government and give them tools to become effective citizens.  Student groups introduced proposals for improving their city, from curbing gang violence to improving school nutrition and public transit.  Oakland Mayor Jean Quan discussed and evaluated the proposals.  "Each of the proposals had one great concrete thing they can do and they did a good job for the most part targeting people who had some power. But they still need to learn to identify things they themselves can do in the community to make a difference.”  Get the details on Youth Radio.MayorQuan_CivicsDay
